CALL FOR PAPERS (Deadline for Submission: 30 April 2016)
The Italian Association for Canadian Studies, with the support of the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’, invites proposals for the international conference “Made in Canada: the Languages of the Media”. The conference will be held at the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’, June 28-30, 2016. Deadline for submitting a proposal is 30 April 2016.
Main theme
In the late Fifties, the so-called Toronto School of Communication introduced a new approach to the very ideas of ‘medium/media’, insisting on the humanistic roots of the term and suggesting a trans-disciplinary idea/view(?) of old and new forms of communications. Storytelling became a shared strategy leading to a variety of forms, expressions and languages, in turn reflecting various dimensions of the Canadian kaleidoscopic cultural scenario.
This conference intends to map the state of the art of the multiform ‘Languages of the Media’ in Canada, so to frame, whether possible, a specific Canadian approach to old and new forms of storytelling across the media. The terms ‘medium/media’ are here understood in their broader dimension, in association to a variety of areas of studies and experiences that this conference acknowledges as complementary and collaborative approaches to the evolving cultural ecosystem.
Accordingly, the Conference is designed to welcome scholars from different academic fields, as well as trans-disciplinary proposals. Possible aspects to be addressed include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Historical perspectives on the media, storytelling, forms of communications and expression in Canada;
· Assessment of old and new Canadian scholars/schools/traditions on the media, storytelling, forms of communications and expression;
· Canadian hybrid media, media cross-contaminations;
· Canadian media cross-adaptations: visual narratives, adaptations, translations, rewritings, intersemiotic translations, audiovisual translations, intermediality;
· Italian-Canadian media scenarios;
· Media, memory and archives.
